This section provides you with a checklist to prepare you for installation. Please use this checklist as a guide for a successful installation.
Each of the following bullet points is described in more detail in the sections that follow.
You must have the following to install Pervasive.SQL 9 SP1 (9.1):
Note
Due to recent trends in the rapid development of the Linux operating environment, please refer to the Pervasive Software web site for the latest information concerning the list of supported platforms.
Your operating system (and, optionally, version of Internet Explorer for Windows platforms) must be supported by Pervasive.SQL 9 SP1 (9.1). The README file for Pervasive.SQL 9 SP1 (9.1) contains the list of supported operating systems and other software requirements.
You can access the README file from the root directory on the distribution media.
Pervasive recommends that you use client requesters that are the same version as the database engine. If you choose, you may use a client requester that is a newer version than the database engine with which it interacts. The use of a client requester that is an older version than the database engine is not recommended. The client requester may or may not function correctly. Pervasive does not guarantee that older versions of client requesters will function correctly with newer versions of the engine.
To install Pervasive.SQL 9 SP1 (9.1) on a Windows 32-bit server platform, you must have full administrator-level rights on the machine where you will install Pervasive.SQL 9 SP1 (9.1). For information on granting administrative rights, please refer to Pervasive.SQL User's Guide.
Contact your application vendor or review the documentation provided by your vendor to ensure that they support the Pervasive.SQL 9 SP1 (9.1) engine version and mode that you want to install.
If installing the Pervasive.SQL 9 SP1 (9.1) Server edition, the installation and upgrade should be performed during a period of low use.
As with any significant software installation, be sure to back up any important files on the target hard drive, including data files, before you begin the installation.

If, during your system down time, you can install the requesters to all the machines that need them, then you should install the server first and immediately upgrade all the client machines. That way, the client requesters are the same version as the database engine.
If you need to upgrade the clients at a different time than the server, and your users need access to the system between these times, you should use a different approach. One method you can use is to install the Pervasive.SQL server on a test machine. Then, when you install the new requesters, you can give Pervasive System Analyzer (PSA) the location of the test server to verify the successful client installation. The client requesters are the same version as the database engine on the test server. Once the client installation is complete, your applications can use the new requesters against your production server until it is time to upgrade the production server engine to the new release. That is, for a period until you upgrade the production server, your applications use client requesters that are a newer version than the database engine. After you upgrade the production server, the client requesters and the database engine are all the same version, which is the recommended usage.
If you plan to install Pervasive.SQL to a clustered environment using either Microsoft Cluster Service or NetWare Cluster Services, please read the following in Advanced Operations Guide: Server High-Availability Support .
Some default setting in Pervasive.SQL need to be adjusted if your configuration includes certain qualities. For example, the default settings need adjustment if you have:
Please review Configuration for Special Installation Situations for these or other relevant issues, especially if you encounter problems after installation.
Pervasive Software strongly recommends that you read the information contained in the README file, readme.htm. The README file contains late-breaking product news that could not be included as part of the JavaHelp documentation.
You can access the README file from the root directory on the distribution media.
