Brief HIPAA BackgroundThe U.S. Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in August 1996. HIPAA was enacted to improve healthcare delivery and to protect the privacy and security of patient health information. Six years since its enactment, all healthcare entities-from physician's offices to medical claims clearinghouses-that deal with patient health information are facing HIPAA's implementation requirements. HIPAA will necessitate sweeping changes in most healthcare transaction and administrative information systems.For official HIPAA information and compliance schedules visit: Pervasive HIPAA Readiness StatementIn order to provide you with the assurance you need for your HIPAA compliance initiatives that include applications built on Pervasive.SQL, Pervasive Software has engaged a nationally recognized, independent healthcare and security IT consulting firm (CTG HealthCare Solutions [CTGHS]) to review Pervasive Software's database engine to determine any issues with the known Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Administrative Simplification laws. CTGHS reviewed Pervasive.SQL (versions V8 and 2000i) for the Transaction, Privacy and proposed Security rules that will be published by the end of 2002. CTGHS works closely with Pervasive's technical and product marketing team to evaluate products and make recommendations, as well as provide HIPAA expertise to Pervasive.CTGHS concluded that the Pervasive.SQL V8 and Pervasive.SQL 2000i releases, when deployed in the manner described below, consistent with the manufacturer's intent, provides the infrastructure required for the security of the host application to protect the information stored within, and to meet HIPAA compliance requirements. When used in this configuration Pervasive.SQL 2000i and Pervasive.SQL V8 do not present any HIPAA Transaction, Privacy and known Security compliance issues. Pervasive.SQL V8 and Pervasive.SQL 2000i are not intended for use as stand-alone modules. In this deployment model, they are not HIPAA ready.
