AUSTIN, TEXAS—June 9, 1999—Pervasive Software Inc. (NASDAQ:PVSW), a pioneer in software for powerful yet radically simplified Web and packaged application development, deployment and information management, today announced availability of the new Pervasive.SQLTM2000 database engine for Server, Workgroup, and Workstation environments. The new engine—a next-generation evolution of the Pervasive.SQL version 7 database—delivers faster SQL data processing, a fully-integrated ODBC driver for streamlined industry-standard connectivity, and peer-to-peer technology that enables simplified deployment of a single application across multiple environments.
Consistent with Pervasive's database design philosophy, Pervasive.SQL 2000 offers widely scalable, best-of-both worlds transactional and relational database access and industry-leading low total cost of ownership (TCO). A common code-base for all Pervasive products allows developers to scale applications without code changes, data file modifications, or library relinking—speeding time to market and saving money.
The Pervasive.SQL 2000 design also dramatically reduces many of the costly, time-consuming tasks associated with database operation by including innovative features such as:
- Continuous operation—backups while the database is running
- Archival logging—ensures data entry is logged to disk
- Automatic server recovery—reverts to last completed transaction
- Instantaneous file allocation—no more file over-runs
- Index balancing—for automated performance optimization
The Pervasive.SQL 2000 engine features a new, integrated ODBC API designed to maximize data throughput at the workstation level as well as in the client/server environment. An integrated ODBC API allows stricter and automated adherence to ODBC standards for streamlined development efforts and more flexible application deployments.
"Creating software very rapidly that performs and automates many of the functions other
companies handle manually gives us an obvious competitive edge. Pervasive products have been indispensable for this," said Jim Vasilou, Manager of Information Services at Attorney's Title Guaranteed Fund, Inc.
"Pervasive.SQL is easy to install, makes file transaction and transaction processing more efficient, and provides plenty of room for even a large organization to grow," said Jay McKinney, Director of Support and Services, MACESS Corporation.
Technical enhancements over previous generation Pervasive database engines include:
- Workgroup engine—for peer-to-peer deployments
- Pervasive control center—a single launch point for all Pervasive utilities that includes security for configuration and monitor functions
- SQL data manager
- New Win32 configuration utility, new Win32 function executor
- Distributed tuning interface—for flexible engine configuration and control
- Microsoft BackOffice and Netfinity certified
- Support Oracle APIs for expanded scalability
- Long filename support
- Support for ADO/OLE DB and JDBC
Pervasive.SQL 2000's open interface allows developers to build front-end applications in any popular programming language or environment, including Java, Delphi, BASIC, Visual BASIC, C, C++, CBOL, Pascal, PowerBuilder and Fox Pro.
Applications based on previous Pervasive database products can be migrated to take advantage of Pervasive.SQL 2000's enhanced performance and flexibility with little or no additional code. A comprehensive migration guide is available to help developers take full advantage of Pervasive.SQL 2000 in application upgrades.
