Tech Tip

Using RiFL Function for Quick Records Count

Occasionally it is necessary to know how many records are in your source before you start processing a file. This User-Defined RiFL Function will retrieve the number of records from a flat file:

'could add parameters
Private Function RecCnt()
On error goto foo
dim ret
'put some silly large number here
ret = FileReadLine("Tutor1.asc",110)
print(ret)
return ret
foo:
print(err.description)
ret = Left(trim(parse(2, err.description,"only")),3)
print(ret & " records are in the file")
return ret
End Function

The FileReadLine function will throw an error if you give it a record number that doesn't exist. As part of the err.Description, it tells you how many records are in the file.

Note: If the source is an ASCII Delimited file with a header, the header will be counted as a record.
