Tech Tip

Learn More about the New Upsert Method in the Salesforce 7.0 API

A new Upsert method has been added to the Salesforce 7.0 API. By using the Upsert method we can reduce the amount of operations made to Salesforce. This allows for faster execution of an integration job that requires inserting and updating data.

The Pervasive Salesforce 7.0 connector takes advantage of the new Upsert method. Map Designer has allowed for Upserts Actions in previous versions of the Salesforce connector, but the Upsert was being performed in multiple operations. Now, the Upsert action is performed in one operation.

To use the new Upsert Method there are requirements that must be met in Salesforce as well as in the Map. First the Salesforce entity the map will write to will need to have an external id defined. This external id is the key used in the foreign system Salesforce will be integrated with. The external id must be unique or the Upsert action will not work. After an external id has been defined in Salesforce an Action Key must be added to the target fields in Map Designer. To do this select the target Salesforce field that will be use as an Action Key, right click and select Set Action Key. Now when performing an Upsert action in Map Designer the new Upsert method will be used.

Salesforce has three possible results when using the Upsert method. If not external id is found in the Salesforce entity, a record is inserted. If exactly one match is found for the external id, the record is updated. If more than one match is found, Salesforce will return an error.

Using Salesforce’s Upsert method will improve performance in reducing the number of operations. The changes required for the Upsert to work are easily implemented and are recommended when integrating with Salesforce.
