Tech Tip: How to Get PSQL Workgroup Engine Revving After Installing Windows Vista™

This month’s tip is a useful one for those Workgroup users installing Windows Vista. For those users of PSQL Workgroup engine who are unable to start properly after performing an initial installation on Windows Vista and then logging off, you should know this issue occurs regardless of how you are logged into the system (standard user or administrative user). Several workaround suggestions are available to solve this problem; however, Pervasive highly recommends that users select the option presented below to solve the issue.

Allow members of all groups (standard and administrator) to start the Workgroup Engine

Pervasive offers the Pervasive PSQL Service Utility for Windows Vista that will automatically set-up both the Workgroup Engine and/or the Client Cache Engine (used by the Workgroup Engine and Pervasive Client) to run as a service. This is available from the Pervasive Component Zone.

For Windows Vista users this provides the needed functionality to allow the Workgroup Engine to perform without any additional modifications.

Installation procedure

After installing Pervasive.SQL Workgroup proceed as follows:

1. Unzip file and execute psqlsvcsetup.exe

2. UAC windows will display following warning message “an unidentified program wants access to your computer”; to continue enter an administrator password.

3. Specify installation folder (where Pervasive.SQL engine components have been installed), by default it will be c:\pvsw\bin

4. When prompted to select Service account, either choose Local System or User Account (provide name & password) after taking into consideration the following:

Local System: The caveat with this solution is there is no remote file access.

User Account: This option can support remote drive access. The Service Account must have rights to access the remote files. Note that user would need right permissions to all the folders (and sub folders and files) it needs.
