Techtip: Web Services and PHP with Linux
Did you know that you can use Pervasive PSQL v9 for Linux as part of the LAMP stack to enable access to your existing PSQL application data?
Apache: Pervasive PSQL v9 for Linux can run on the same system as an Apache Web server. In most cases this requires only minimal configuration; often it is just a matter of adding the Apache server user to the pvsw group. This configuration can be used locally or in cases where the Web services needs to access data remotely via the PSQL v9 Linux client to a remote Linux, NetWare or Windows server.
PHP: For customers wanting to do web development using PHP (PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor), Pervasive provides sample code for designing applications around PHP. The Pervasive 'Getting Started Guide' also outlines the steps for creating PHP connections and how to enclose the database calls in the required tags.
Here is an example of connecting to a Pervasive PSQL database using PHP:
// connect to DEMODATA database no uid or password
$connect = odbc_connect("demodata", "", "");
// set the query variable to your SQL
$query = "SELECT * from Department";
// obtain a result object for your query
$result = odbc_exec($connect, $query);
As you can see the connection string is very simple and allows for data to be queried and a result set returned with minimal effort.
Combining PSQL on Linux with the LAMP stack can open the door to a variety of deployment possibilities.
