Tech Tip: Using Linux and Samba to...
Using Linux and Samba to Host PSQL Databases for
Workgroup Engines
In a PSQL Workgroup installation, it is common to store PSQL databases and Btrieve files on NetWare and Windows servers. This makes it easy to share data between two or more PCs running the PSQL Workgroup Engine. You may not know that this is also easy using a Linux server and the Samba package. If you are unfamiliar with Samba, click here to learn more about it. Samba provides file and print services to Windows PCs. With Samba you can connect your Windows PC to a Linux server using a mapped drive, just like you would with NetWare or Windows Server.
Most Linux distributions install Samba by default. If it's not installed on your server, simply use your distribution's package manager to add it. Once you have it installed, adding a network share is a simple change to the Samba configuration file smb.conf.
Here's an example:
[PSQLFILES]
comment = PSQL Files on Linux for Workgroup Engines
path = /data/psqlfiles
public = yes
writeable = yes
printable = no
This setup information will make the share PSQLFILES available for connection through a mapped drive from any Windows PC. Once mapped to the PC, you can copy database files and/or create new files on your Linux server.
