Level by Level, Market-Driven Security
Data security is not a given. Unfortunately, many think it is. This results in greater vulnerabilities, higher probability of data loss and hence loss of money for both you and your customers. Just imagine, your customer being unable to send out invoices this month because the data in the accounting application you sold him is corrupt and he does not have a reliable backup.
In The 7 Levels of Highly Effective Security white paper, you get a practical overview of what security constraints must be considered on which level, why you should care and what questions you should ask yourself in order to offer your customer a market-driven security solution.

For specific information on the data security challenges that application developers encounter and how you can successfully address these, we invite you to visit the Pervasive Security Solution Portal. In addition, the portal offers application developers innovating ideas on how they can turn a security weakness into a competitive advantage.

Tech Tip: Updated Support for Large Files in PSQL v9
You probably already know that PSQL v9 allows you to scale individual files/tables to 128 GB (2 times over previous versions!). But did you know that PSQL v9 also lets you avoid the 2 GB file/table segmentation that is required in earlier versions? By default, PSQL v9 behaves identically with previous versions. For example, files/tables over 2 GB in size will automatically split into 2 GB sub-files. For instance, an 8 GB file would be split into 4 physical 2 GB files. This split occurs seamlessly and does not change your interaction with the SQL table or the Btrieve file. In PSQL v9, a new configuration property has been added in the PSQL Control Center to allow you control over this behavior 'Limit Segment Size to 2 GB' allows you to specify whether you want files divided into 2 GB segments or unified in a single, non-segmented file. Once you have configured the system for large file support you can expect the following behaviors:
| File Format | Behavior |
Pre V8 |
Must be rebuilt to take advantage of the large file support |
V8 & v9 segmented files |
Must be rebuilt to remove the 2GB segmentation |
V8 & v9 less than 2 GB |
Does not need to be rebuilt* |
* V8 format files smaller than 2 GB will automatically be converted to v9 format when segmentation is off and they surpass 2GB.

The advantage of using a larger non-segmented file size is more efficient disk I/O, which usually results in increased performance. Segmentation does have its advantages. If you need to easily transport large data sets from one OS to another, 2 GB files ensure that your data is compatible with more operating systems.

Three Questions to the Developer
What do we mean by "audit"?
An audit is a process that can verify that certain standards have been met, and identify areas in need of remediation or improvement (source: wikipedia.com).
Three randomly picked Developer Poll participants will receive a Pervasive t-shirt.
Results of the poll will be published in the January issue of Insights Embedded Database Edition.
